The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday that the urban areas of the besieged city of Mariupol had been cleared of Ukrainian troops, with local military resistance isolated at a metallurgical plant in an industrial area.
Russian forces have been trying to establish full control over Mariupol, Ukraine’s armed forces said, ahead of what is expected to be an intense wave of fighting in the country’s east as Moscow strengthens its positions there.
