Around 2,800 Sacramento City Unified School District teachers went on strike Wednesday after failing to reach an agreement with the district over long-term pay and health benefits, the latest labor strife to disrupt classrooms this school year.
Districts across the country continue to grapple with long-term budget and staffing issues, despite an unprecedented influx of nearly $200 billion in federal pandemic-relief aid to the public-education system. Using that money for salary increases and benefits has been difficult, however, as the federal funds are set to expire in 2024.
