NEWPORT — When it comes to a place like Newport, where tourists come and go on a regular basis, entertainment is key.
The same can be said for local residents. Ultimately, you don’t want the environment to be boring. One of the entities keeping the nightlife alive in the City-by-the-Sea is Spiffy Entertainment. The organization is a media platform with numerous sides, its specialty being event cultivation and digital marketing.
Through networking with bars and venues all over the city, Spiffy Entertainment is putting on lively parties with an inclusive vibe and a positive atmosphere.
The company is headed by Hartford, Connecticut, native Spiffy Darko, who graduated from Salve Regina University with a bachelor’s degree in financial management and business administration, and a master’s in business administration and entrepreneurial studies. He wanted to bring the lifestyle of his hometown to Newport and established the organization in 2016.

“Obviously as a college student you want to go out and enjoy yourself, and living over in Hartford is very nightlife-based,” Darko said when asked why he started the Spiffy Entertainment. “You went out, you went to the bars, you went to the club and you had a good time. It felt like that was missing a little bit in Newport at the time, so when I was about to graduate college, something in me really wanted to start to bring that culture here. So I did it.
“I put on a couple events, they went well and then one thing led to another. I built relationships with just about every bar manager and owner in Newport, and things just took off from there.”
Darko finds Newport to be a very unique and special place. He enjoys the safety of the city and how there isn’t an element of danger when you want to go out for the evening and enjoy yourself.

“You don’t have to worry about anything, and there’s nothing crazy that’s happening out at night,” he said. “I enjoy doing business in a place where I know that people I’m bringing — to whatever venue it is, whatever bar it is or whatever event is going on — are going to be safe and they’re going to have a good time.
“I think that’s one big part about Newport and the second one is the community. It’s very community-based. Even though there’s a lot of tourists that come in the summertime, there’s still a heavy base of locals that are here who tell folks where to go.”
“It’s kind of why we have this platform,” Darko added. “It’s so when people come here, they know what’s going on and they know where to go. We’re almost like their local guide of what’s going on during a certain night. That’s a big thing in Newport, that local-based community that helps facilitate everything else that happens in the city. So that’s one big part of it, too.”
The winter is usually when Darko and his crew lay low, but when the spring and summer roll around, they’ll be getting back to business. He’s optimistic about the possibilities 2022 can bring once the weather gets warmer.
“We do have St. Patrick’s Day coming up, which is one of the biggest holidays in Newport,” Darko said. “We will be hosting some events during the parade as long as the parade hopefully does happen. We’ll be partnering with all of the big bars that we do work with, such as Dockside and O’Brien’s, so we’ll be helping out with promo and things like that.
“The summertime is really when we amp up everything and we’re doing everything daily, so I would say for everyone to look out for us during the summer. This upcoming season should be bigger than any summer we’ve had. We did get to open back up last year, but it was still pretty limited, so this time around we should be full force.”
“There’s definitely some things on the horizon, for sure,” Darko added. “As far as what to expect at one of our events, our whole vibe is all about having a good time and being very welcoming. When people do step into one of our events, there’s always a lot of positive energy. So people can expect to have that same kind of vibe.
“There’s always good music, whether it’s live music or a DJ. We’re always bringing something that people can dance to, or if they just want to grab a drink and socialize. There’s a few different things you can look forward to when you attend.”
