Most Jurupa Valley students aren’t able to visit New York City to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, especially during the pandemic.
But a piece of the World Trade Center came to them Friday, Sept. 3.

For the second time in three years — the tradition was interrupted by the coronavirus crisis last year — a metal beam from the destroyed New York City skyscrapers visited Patriot High School, brought there by history teacher Bob Green.
The 25-foot steel beam was acquired by the San Bernardino County Firefighters’ Association, in an effort spearheaded by Green’s father, a retired firefighter.
The beam features a placard listing the names of all 343 firefighters who died rescuing people from the World Trade Center during the 2001 attacks. Green’s students research individual firefighters as part of a project on the events of Sept. 11.
