Virginia health officials report 1,760 new COVID-19 cases, 49 new hospitalizations in Thursday update

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia health officials reported 1,760 new COVID-19 cases — the biggest single-day spike in cases since April 13 — and five new virus-related deaths in Thursday morning’s update, which brings the Commonwealth’s total coronavirus count up to 702,819 confirmed and probable cases and 11,546 confirmed and probable deaths.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed 543,294 cases and 9,750 deaths are related to the virus as of Thursday, Aug. 5. However, 159,525 cases and 1,796 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

According to VDH’s Thursday tally, more than 107,000 cases have been reported from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

• Alleghany County: 1,417 cases, 72 hospitalizations, and 50 deaths
• Amherst County: 3,094 cases, 135 hospitalizations, and 40 deaths
• Appomattox County: 1,666 cases, 73 hospitalizations, and 26 deaths
• Bath County: 278 cases, 11 hospitalizations, and 11 deaths
• Bedford County: 6,972 cases, 263 hospitalizations, and 110 deaths
• Bland County: 712 cases, 30 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths
• Botetourt County: 2,759 cases, 71 hospitalizations, and 37 deaths (-1)
• Buena Vista: 939 cases, 27 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
• Campbell County: 5,176 cases, 219 hospitalizations, and 104 deaths
• Carroll County: 2,797 cases, 231 hospitalizations, and 80 deaths
• Charlotte County: 900 cases, 57 hospitalizations, and 21 deaths
• Covington: 628 cases, 33 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths
• Craig County: 343 cases, 18 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths
• Danville: 4,608 cases, 325 hospitalizations, and 144 deaths
• Floyd County: 913 cases, 31 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
• Franklin County: 4,248 cases, 206 hospitalizations, and 83 deaths
• Galax: 1,184 cases, 99 hospitalizations, and 53 deaths
• Giles County: 1,375 cases, 55 hospitalizations, and 24 deaths
• Grayson County: 1,544 cases, 107 hospitalizations, and 39 deaths
• Halifax County: 2,913 cases, 86 hospitalizations, and 78 deaths
• Henry County: 4,764 cases, 384 hospitalizations, and 124 deaths
• Highland County: 119 cases, 1 hospitalization, and 1 death
• Lexington: 1,211 cases, 29 hospitalizations, and 33 deaths
• Lynchburg: 7,732 cases, 335 hospitalizations, and 149 deaths
• Martinsville: 1,645 cases, 171 hospitalizations, and 79 deaths
• Montgomery County: 9,472 cases, 192 hospitalizations, and 81 deaths
• Nelson County: 900 cases, 41 hospitalizations, and 13 deaths
• Patrick County: 1,448 cases, 121 hospitalizations, and 46 deaths
• Pittsylvania County: 5,826 cases, 281 hospitalizations, and 86 deaths
• Pulaski County: 2,838 cases, 139 hospitalizations, and 69 deaths
• Radford: 2,304 cases, 40 hospitalizations, and 28 deaths
• Roanoke City: 9,007 cases, 279 hospitalizations, and 200 deaths
• Roanoke County: 8,843 cases, 202 hospitalizations, and 149 deaths
• Rockbridge County: 1,597 cases, 60 hospitalizations, and 48 deaths
• Salem: 2,317 cases, 78 hospitalizations, and 50 deaths
• Wythe County: 2,881 cases, 178 hospitalizations, and 81 deaths

Since Wednesday, Aug. 4, the VDH reported 41 new COVID-19 cases in Bedford County, 40 in Roanoke County, 27 in Roanoke City, 24 in Wythe County, 23 in Lynchburg, 22 in Campbell County, 17 in Pittsylvania County, 14 in Franklin County, 12 in Halifax County, 12 in Montgomery County, eight in Amherst County, eight in Botetourt County, eight in Henry County, eight in Pulaski County, seven in Danville, seven in Salem, six in Radford, five in Bland County, five in Carroll County, four in Appomattox County, four in Patrick County, three in Floyd County, three in Giles County, two in Covington, two in Craig County, one in Alleghany County, one in Charlotte County, one in Galax, one in Grayson County, one in Lexington, and one in Nelson County.

In addition, of the five new virus-related deaths reported on Thursday, the department says one is from Campbell County and one is from Roanoke County.

However, between Wednesday and Thursday, the VDH reported one less coronavirus death in Botetourt County.

Health officials say they have received 31,595 total records of confirmed and probable virus-related hospitalizations around Virginia as of Thursday, which is 49 more hospitalizations than VDH reported on Wednesday.

Of these newly-reported hospitalizations from Thursday, two are from Franklin County, two are from Lynchburg, two are from Roanoke City, one is from Bedford County, one is from Danville, one is from Halifax County, one is from Henry County, one is from Montgomery County, and one is from Pittsylvania County.
