ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Patrick Henry Patriots have their new girls basketball coach. They didn’t have to go far to get their coach. PH named girls assistant coach Eugene “Blue” Cook for the role. Cook is a 1994 graduate of PH where he played football and basketball. He graduated from Ferrum College……..Cook played hoops for the Panthers. For the last two seasons, he was an assistant for the PH girls basketball team! Cook replaces Mike Hedrick after four seasons at Patrick Henry he turned around a struggling program. Hedrick led PH to a 72-23 record. winning 3 district titles, 2 regional titles, 4 elite 8 appearances. 2 final fours and a state finals appearance. Cook says it is dream to be the head coach at his alma mater.
“I am just super excited, being from Roanoke, coming from Patrick Henry High School. Having a great mentor in Mike Hedrick and saw what he did with the girls program. Like I said he brought it from the grave yard. Everyone knows about Patrick Henry Girls basketball now. That is the tradition that we want to continue,” said Hedrick. Cook has been a head coach for boys and girls travel hoops teams in the area.
He was also the girls coach at Northside Middle School for two seasons!
