Magician Denny Corby is one funny guy.
Corby, who will appear in Erie at Kellar’s: A Modern Magic & Comedy Club this weekend, is not strictly a magician, but he’s a comedian who uses magic to entertain.
Growing up working in the only paper company in Scranton, Corby lived a version of the hit TV sitcom “The Office.” Despite having the opportunity to work for this third-generation family business, his dad encouraged him to “go on out there and turn tricks for a living.”
Kellar’s owner Bobby Borgia describes Corby’s performance style as a “combination of comedy and magic, but he’s definitely not clownish,” Borgia said. “He has headlined for the ‘Penn & Teller: Fool Us’ show on the CW network, and for major corporate events. He is a top-notch performer who earned standing ovations at his previous Erie shows. He uses cellphones and modern technology in unique ways to delight and amaze his audiences.”
Corby is also a popular speaker, performing for major corporate clients and appearing on ABC and NBC. Magic lovers can even use his popular how-to DVD to perform their own tricks.
Corby said his shows depend on audience participation and that every show is different. Not only did Corby get the applause when he was in Erie last year, but some people who came to the show the first night came back for the next performance.
Corby has fond memories of his previous experience in Erie.
“I have traveled the world doing comedy, and I have a general idea of how (the shows) will begin and end, but the audience participation determines what happens along the way. The Erie audience was beyond my expectations,” he said of his September 2020 experience. “I cannot wait to come back to Erie because those shows were amazing. We had so much fun, it was bananas! We are going to have a great time this week, I have no doubt.”
Joining Corby at Kellar’s this weekend will be Joel Maxwell, drummer for Mobi, who will be warming up the audience with sleight of hand maneuvers at Kellar’s Performance Bar. As we begin to emerge from our COVID cocoons, Borgia points out, “If ever there was a time when the world needs a little magic, it is right now.”
Denny Corby will appear Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Kellar’s: A Modern Magic & Comedy Club, 1402 State St. Tickets are $30. For more information, call 814-461-0911 or visit kellarsmagic.com.
