DULUTH, MN– COVID-19 is taking its toll on several sports teams throughout our region.
On Tuesday alone, five games were canceled due to covid.
Impacting teams from St. Scholastica to Grand Rapids.
The postponements come as the CDC has issued new guidance, asking schools to consider limiting the number of activities like indoor sports.
CDC researchers said they were particularly concerned about indoor sports and other extracurricular activities that do not allow for distancing and mask use.
They cited a December high school wrestling tournament in Florida where 30 percent of the 130 athletes, coaches, and referees who participated were diagnosed with the virus.
Aubrie Hoover, a Senior Public Health Educator with St. Louis County, said part of the new recommendation suggests teams practice in pods.
“Really coordinating or putting your players in pods so that if one of those players becomes symptomatic or tests positive for covid, then we are not putting out an entire team we are just putting out those closest in that pod,” said Hoover.
Hoover said the county has been working with the schools and Minnesota Department of Health to report and track cases as they happen.
